Feeling guilty because I said I was familiar with some basic html from using it in my blog from my last interview, I started trying to teach myself html today by creating a website. I was proud that I had figured a lot of the stuff out and happy with the results, but now GeoCities is refusing to display my page, saying that I've exceeded my data transfer usage. The hourly limit on data transfer at GeoCities is 4.2 MB. I appeal to the experts: will be a problem in the future? I've put up my pictures and so everything else should be a matter of formatting text and adding links, but what if, when I unveil this masterpiece, it gets a number of hits from you all? Should I be using some other web hosting service (if that's even the correct term.. I think I'm losing nerd credibility as I speak)?

4.2 MB? You easily exceed that if you decide to post an image gallery and a couple people browse it. I'd find somewhere else, though I'm not too sure where - maybe find a friend with a paid account (like dreamhost) and offer them a chunk of change to put your small page up? That way you wouldn't have to worry about ads or transfer rates (unless you hosted an advance copy of Harry Potter 5 or something).

Pictures at an HTML Exhibition

Yeah, he's pretty much right. Pictures are big and geocities kind of sucks for that purpose. You could try hosting them on LJ, but I don't know how much their actual service costs, since you'd probably actually have to get a pay account. I don't have a web host of my own, unfortunately.

Yeah, I would have to get a paid account on LJ to be able to store photos here (unless I only wanted to store six photos and was able/willing to convert them down to icon size and use them as icons). I mean, the point of my website is mostly for me to learn html, but I have always wanted to get my paper on the sociology of byzantine monasteries up on the web, just because I think it's neat and it's on a subject that's so friggin obscure that I doubt people would be able to plagerize it.
