1 in 100 US Adults Behind Bars

This is some of the more appalling news I've read in a long time. And the news recently has not been lacking in appalling.

The number of American adults is about 230 million, meaning that one in every 99.1 adults is behind bars... Either way, said Susan Urahn.. “we aren’t really getting the return in public safety from this level of incarceration.”

No kidding!?!?

sort of related, tangentially, in my head

Hey, let me take this opportunity to encourage you to (if you don't already) watch The Wire. I think you'd find the themes of the show quite interesting and engaging. I'd also be interested to read your response to it. (There's some violence, but it's not glorified, and the language is, er, salty but authentic.)

Also, yeah. Would it be acceptable for me to just stop reading the news? Because it just pisses me off/makes me sad.

Hmmm. I've seen short snippets of the Wire (my ex's housemate watched it religiously) but I haven't ever followed it enough to really know the characters or make sense of the plot. I'll add it to my Netflix cue.
