... something about Vonnegut's manic energy, probably.
I just finished watching "Harrison Bergeron", aka "Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron", which is based on the Kurt Vonnegut short story about an America where it's the government's job to make its citizens equal. It's a fun movie with a few more ideas and extrapolations than are usually found in on-screen science fiction. I don't know why I hadn't seen or heard about the film until now. It stars Sean Astin (who played Sam in LOtR) and the supporting cast includes Christopher Plummer, Eugene Levy in a wonderful cameo as the US President, and Nigel Bennett (the actor who played the bad vampire in "Forever Knight"). The plot of the movie is necessarily a lot more elaborate than the short story, but the basic premise is there just the same and subject to more examination.
An amazing thing about the relationship of social satire to society: Kurt Vonnegut concieved of the story as a ridiculous idea, but his readers thought it made a cogent point about modern American society. ( One sentence cut for spoilers )
In Emily news aside from "I just watched a good movie": I've been overlooking part-time positions in my job search, but at this point I've found several part-time jobs which interest me and I'm not inspired to apply for any of the full-time jobs listed in various places. Goodbye, full benefits package. There's a part time job as an editorial assistant at the Minnesota Women's Press, and a 10-15 hr/wk job as a health writer, and a 10-15 hr/wk job as a museum "interpreter" (no, that doesn't involve other languages, it involves interpreting museum content for schoolchildren. and entertainment. and probably cooking.). So here's hoping I get some combination, or any, of these jobs. At least I'll be gaining more skills and experience to put in future resumes.
