Nov. 9th, 2005 08:34 amSo I've been fantasizing about what happens when I get that fantasy job at the ACLU that starts in the middle of March (There is a job at the ACLU that I'm interested in. It does not, however, probably, start in the middle of March.). I think I'd get a North American Rail Pass for $543, which would allow me to travel as much of within country and Canada as I wanted, contigent upon me spending some time in Canada.
First I'd swing down South to Winston Salem to see
duckie. Contingent upon time and funds, I might go to either Charlotte or Savannah, just because I'm curious, or even all the way down to Miami to see my grandparents.
Then I'd go back to to DC, maybe pausing in Williamsburg if it could be timed correctly. Then the larger portion of the trip would begin. Up to Philadelphia, because people are always telling me how Philly is a great city to see. Then to New York, not for any extended period of time because I've already been there, but to drop in and see my Aunt Sarah. Then to New Haven, for a brief drop in on
my_sihaya. Then through Vermont and up to Canada and Montreal, which I've wanted to see for a while and which would consistute the real tourist destination of this trip. If there are fine-print restrictions and the amount of rail time which one must make in Canada, then I might even go from New Haven to Montreal via Maine and Fairfax/Nova Scotia/Prince George's Island area.
I'd want to stay in Montreal for at least four or five days, to rest up for the potentially most painful portion of this trip: Montreal to Minneapolis. Here is where the major weakness of the trip could potentially come into play, particularly if there are heating problems on Canadian trains: it's damn cold and frozen in February. Depending how the train lines run around the Great Lakes region, I could either see Toronto and Madison, or just Madison, or just Duluth, which I've been sort of curious about in my time at Carleton. Then some quality time in the Twin Cities and Northfield.
From there, there are two possible routes this trip could take to go home. First, it could just go straight back to DC, stopping briefly in Pittsburg if it's worthwhile. Or second, I could head for the West Coast. I'd like to catch up with some family friends now in the Salt Lake City area who have always made their home open to me. Then maybe Portland, so that I know all my options when I move back to the West Coast. The trip could end in the Bay Area, and then I could catch a plane ride home.
