If you'll permit me some uncharacteristic profanity, yesterday sucked to high hell. First dealing with the comps class, and then explaining where my project is going to Professor Igra and saying "I don't know" a lot. I still don't know what my individual sections are going to be on. I spent most of yesterday having random thoughts which were then dicarded as either undoable(Veblen and environmentalism?), unrelated (Veblen and the New Deal?), or ridiculously boring and narrow (Veblen and Norwegian clergy in the Upper Midwest?). I also had a bad cold. Then the news of Beth's death, and the gathering. The chaplain said some words about God. I always wonder, when things like that are said at memorials, if the person being mourned believed in God.

After dinner, Lauren, Beth's former roommate, who spent the day at the hospital, was hanging out at Benton. Some other people came to, I'd say, sit shiva with her. Her and Luke and Cara, a friend of hers and Beth's I took it, played a nearly endless game of Settlers of Cataan. It took nearly two and a half hours because Luke and Lauren kept grousing at each other and Cara kept getting up to write emails, or do other stuff. For Lauren and Luke, Settlers is all about trash talking. Understandably Lauren was very grumpy and trying to keep her mind off of other things. Three out of five in the room had bad colds, myself included. It was a long night.

I plan to spend the day finding more articles on different aspects of Veblen if sickness doesn't prevent me.
