It’s quite wonderful to be home. I had a good trip across the continent because I had only slept from 10 until 2:30 in the morning the night before, so I slept for most of the plane rides. On the second leg of the trip, Denver to San Fran, I had three seats to spread out on, so I just lay down and went to sleep for most of it, waking up for the snack and to watch the descent into the Bay Area. The past few times in the two year that I’ve flown into the Bay Area, it’s been at night I think. Airplane descents at night are spectacular because of all of the different lights marking out the topography of the area. The Bay Area is built so differently from so many of the cities you fly over that are flat cities in the middle of flat land, and at night the lights appear flat too from the sky. The lights in the Bay Area have texture and variance. But there’s also something quite wonderful about actually seeing the area in the daylight.

I took the bus into Marin. It’s so very green here, you have to think to remember that in other parts of the country it’s winter. I’ve taken two long walks with Dad since getting here, one with Linda in the morning where we just discussed Myers-Briggs type indicators for an hour. I used Myers-Briggs to analyze Youth Venture, and the people within Youth Venture, in my exit interview, and so it was really neat to have other people who are very, very familiar with “deep” Myers Briggs to bounce my perceptions off of. And last night we went out to Ping’s and had a wonderful dinner of their trademark green beans, black mushrooms, and spinach with shrimp. (I just started being able to eat solid foods again yesterday.) I had a full night of sleep last night in very familiar surroundings and then took a bath with my old copy of Barbara Tuchman’s Practicing History.

There’s something very reassuring about my old room. It’s such a reflection of me in my late high school years, as modified by me the summer between my sophomore and junior year of college. Old National Geographic maps, a wire hanger mobile from the ceiling with two wire sculptures I made, pictures of me with friends from elementary and middle school and from the first two years of college, a Two Towers poster, Byzantine icons.

I’ve given myself permission to take today off since I worked so intensely to create transition materials Thursday and Friday and since I spent yesterday flying cross country. As I was drifting between wakefulness and unconsciousness on the plane, I had stress flashes about printing things out, which I did a lot to create transition materials, and creating write-ups with the words “VISTA” and “Youth Venture” in them. So, overall right now, I’m a very content person. This could change. My father wants me to scan through his 230 page most recent book (subtitle: “Connecting People, Processes and IT for Business Results”), which could be a bit dry, and give my comments, and I should start doing much more research into jobs and internships, not just short term things for now but also long term things for wherever I decide to move.

On the front of differing sartorial codes on the East Coast, the girl I carpooled with to high school, just moved to New York City three weeks ago. She was one of the “popular” girls in high school (they weren’t actually that popular outside of their group, but they were certainly exclusive) and wore all of the J. Crew and Abercromie & Finch and high end apparel necessary to uphold her place in that crowd. But when she dresses like she does in Marin, people in NYC tend to respond as though she’s a hobo, which is pretty funny seeing as she’s coming into at least several million dollars and, by Marin standards, her casual dress reflects that.
