So. I went to the convention in Fargo this weekend. Surprising but true, entering the entertainment (hotels and shopping malls) part of Fargo at night is kind of like entering Las Vegas: there are just that many electric lights. The con was the second con I've attended, and the first not-solely-literary con I've attended, so it was interesting to see an actor(Dean Haglund of the X-Files) do his convention shpeal. The highlight of the con for me was the Star Trek panel. I was in a room with people who had read as many, or more, Star Trek novels as I have!
The con did make me wish I were better at being social and just walking up to people and talking to them. I didn't know what to do when the people I came with weren't around and I feel like I missed some potentially valuable interactions because of shyness/lack of extraversion. I don't want to be the annoying person that comes up to someone and starts talking and yet what else are conventions for?
I talked to my father today and took a long bath after getting home and now I am feeling much better than I did after the car ride home. My father is in China right now, so these conversations are rare, even though with his phone card it costs less for me to call him in China than it does to call him in California.
Many projects loom on the horizon: dealing with insurance, buying a new computer, getting my glasses repaired, and, last but certainly not least, getting another job. Although, since I'm looking for work in retail, getting another job could actually be the easiest item on that list.
