It's interesting to see how current events impinge on my life. Almost every morning, I see chaplains and military personnel walking over the bridge above the highway into Arlington National Cemetary. I imagine they are heading to funerals. This morning, the news of a school shooting in Minnesota was a shock. The fact that it was in a Native American community made it less surprising but no less sad. I'm surprised there isn't mention of it in any of my friends' livejournal posts. My boss (who is in Minnesota) and I had a few email exchanges with her about it.

@the lack of Livejournal activity over the shootings: It's been a shock for the Carls I'm hanging with right now over break. In that vein and considering the facts that it seems so completely remote from the Carleton/Northfield/South Minnesota bubble and we don't know all the details yet, what could be said that would do it justice?

Of course. On the other hand, it's pretty bizarre that Carleton's homepage doesn't have anything talking about the shootings, but does feature the vignette "From March 13-27, a small group of Carleton students will experience firsthand some of the problems facing the White Earth and Pine Ridge Indian reservations in Minnesota and South Dakota. They are keeping a journal of their experiences." Spring break, I know, even for the Carleton media office.

That headline caught my eye but I don't really know much. That it was at Red Lake doesn't surprise me--I read an article last year about the crime and drug and alcohol problems of that area. So disturbing.
