So in order to replenish my stock of clothing, which was depleted by the loss of one or more boxes during moving, and to get new "business" (non-profit?) clothing, I wanted to go to Christopher & Banks, which is my one stop shopping store: I can go there and all of the tops will fit and be within my price range, not to mention 100% cotton and therefore wonderfully comfortable. Problem: the most convienent Christopher & Banks are in Baltimore and Richmond (100 miles to the south). So I figured out how to take a day and go to the Christopher & Banks in Baltimore. This gorgeous nugget of a plan involves taking the bus to the metro, the yellow line to the green line, the greenbelt shuttle to BWI, the lightrail from BWI into the city, and a bus from the lightrail to the store. Purchase clothing and reverse. It's still worth it for one stop shopping. But Melissa Rifkin asked me to meet her in Silver Springs for a play tonight. Silver Springs may be on the Baltimore side of DC, but I ended up concluding that I wouldn't be able to make it in time. But meanwhile, I figured out from their website that Christopher & Banks has an affiliate store, Acorn, and that there was one reasonably close to me, or closer than Baltimore or Richmond, anyway. So today I made a rather long trip out to the Fair Oaks Mall via metro and bus. The problem was that Acorn is not located in the mall itself but in the surrounding areas and Fair Oaks Mall is a pedestrian island: almost completely surrounded by highways. The one direct way of getting where I needed to go would have involved walking over a car bridge with no sidewalk. The area has a distinct lack of signage as well. I spent like forty minutes trying to orient myself and wandering around this suburban wasteland.
Sometimes being a pedestrian sucks.
The trip wasn't complete loss, since I was able to find some clothing in the mall, and I got to do somesightseeing from the bus, but it was a rather long trip for something I could have done much closer to home.
