It's been an interesting week. Probably more interesting for me to recount to myself than for you to read, but it is recounted here nevertheless. I sunk into this weird having-to-deal-with-bureaucracy and frustrated-with-Youth-Venture funk last weekend. But then I dealt with the leasing office and leasing situation Monday morning and it now appears that I will indeed be approved for a lease change. So, yay!
From there I went to work and took things slow Monday morning because my officemate, Katie, who had been planning the Youth Council conference, was going to come back to the office from a job interview and get preparations for the conference going. Monday afternoon was a blur--I spent it working through preparations with Katie and figuring out various things that she had missed. I may not be temperamentally cut out to lead preparing and running conferences, but I certainly do a good job of assisting a person preparing and running a conference. It's amazing how spending time in motion, productively doing stuff can drive out the blues. Tuesday was the day of me in motion--I made two trips back and forth to Washington Reagan Airport to pick up Youth Council members, did two grocery runs, helped to set up the dinner that Bill, the Chairman of the Board and our CEO, had for the venturers at his apartment, participated in said dinner, schmoozed with our acting president's wife and daughter, cleaned up, and got home at 10 pm. Bill has an amazing apartment--it's actually the apartment that I pointed out to you,
halfsparkle,
zenpenguin and
jissa on our way to the 4th of July fireworks as having weird roofs. The view encompassed the capital, the Washington monument, and the Lincoln memorial.
After spending this morning assisting Katie, who was moving around the office at rapid fire speed, I spent the afternoon actually interacting with the venturers and listening to what they had to say. It's wonderful when we actually get to interact with venturers and hear about all the good they are doing into their communities--it's what makes this job worthwhile. And now the youth council members are out of our office and off to a larger leadership conference, a change in our office which seems to be reflected in the weather as it goes from hot and humid 100 degree heat advisory weather to cold(er) and rain.
There's this idea I've been working on and thinking through about the economic anthropology of women, inspired by some of my thoughts about The Beauty Myth. I've been daydreaming about getting it published in the beginning portion of Harper's magazine, where they have random excerpts from bizarre but provocative articles. It's an idea which feels like it belongs there. The problem is always getting the time and having the energy to write. And the fact that Harper's usually only excerpts articles that have appeared elsewhere in print.
In other news, I had a crush on one of the youth council members. (He's 20, not 13, so it's not creepy.) It's been a really long time since I've had a crush. Not unrelated, I suppose, to the fact that it's been a long time since I've been around guys my age long enough to get a sense of their character and intelligence, which is the prerequisite for lingering crushes (as opposed to, say, coming round a corner and being jolted by the site of a very nice specimen of man or womanhood, which is a lusty crush but not a lingering one).
So, gakking an idea from the illustrious Mr.
bladeforge (I'm not certain exactly what "gakking" means, but I've heard it used before in this context), if any of you would like to ask me a question or two, I'm feeling up to answering.
