Sep. 12th, 2005 09:47 amAs I feared, Schwartzenegger has said he will veto the same-sex marriage law because it doesn't reflect the will of the people, which, as far as reasons to veto it go, is probably the best I can think of. Not that I agree, but yes, this country is a democracy and there's an interesting question of where the civil rights that a civil society/government is supposed to protect conflict with the will of the people. This is a representative democracy, and our representatives are supposed to carry out the will of the people who elected them. I'd draw the line elsewhere, but hey, at least he didn't give the tired old "marriage is between a man and a woman".
On the other hand, I saw Barack Obama being interviewed Sunday morning and he made me want to stand up and applaud, the fact that I was alone in my apartment notwithstanding. He responded to questions in a thoughtful, reasonable and compassionate manner and did a good job of evading the stupid things the interviewer was trying to get him to say (Bush hates black folks, etc.) while still acknowledging the rationale behind the questions. I'm increasingly pessimistic about the political scene, which leads me to hope he's not assasinated, or doesn't die under questionable circumstances. These are grim days.
